Introduction

We human beings live in a world that we can taste, smell, feel and touch, a world largely based on physical laws explained by science. This is the visible, tangible world most of us are familiar with. Few people, however, would deny that there is another world we live in simultaneously, another dimension of life that is equally real and significant. This is the spiritual world, the unseen dimension, the world of spiritual beings and forces. Humans are composed of both body and spirit, and as such we interact with both planes of reality on a daily basis. The great advances of science in recent centuries have made us more aware of the laws of the physical world, but sometimes have blinded us to the spiritual world. This booklet is an attempt to shed light on the spiritual world we live in, and share what God’s Holy Scripture says about it. Just as God has given us guidelines for our benefit on how to live in the physical world, so too he has given us instructions for our interactions with the spiritual world, in order to bless and protect us.

Virtually all societies and peoples recognize the existence and activity of spiritual beings. In Thailand, for example, people call them nat, pii, tootsawan, and winyan; in other cultures they have other names. In the West also, many believe in spirit guides, mediums, and fairies. Here in Bangladesh, we talk of jinn, pŏrībhūt, pret, danob-deo, chorachunni, mamdo, and many other such creatures. Many cultures also believe in impersonal spiritual forces, such as the malevolent power of the evil eye, the influence of planets, the power of mystical Arabic diagrams or magic squares, or the blessings of borkot. To deal with these spiritual beings and forces, we have ojhas, hujurs, kobirajes, and gonoks who claim to know and command these forces with amulets and rituals.

Admittedly, there is much superstition involved in the spirit world and many quacks who claim to manipulate spiritual forces for a price. But there is also a reality behind it. Many people in Bangladesh think that accepting modern science requires us to deny the existence of all of this ‘spiritual’ world. But those societies that are built on modern science in the West have made a full circle and are now turning back to a full-fledged belief in the reality of the spiritual world. Science does not deny spiritual realities, it just ignores it. It deals with the physical world only. Few of us would deny the reality of beings such as jinn or feresta, and many of us have seen them or had friends who have seen these creatures.

To get an accurate picture of this spiritual world, we must look at what the scriptures say about it. To begin with, we know that God is “Rabbul al-amin’; the Lord of all that is created. Besides God, all we know to have existed eternally are God’s Word (John 1:1) and God’s Spirit. Everything else, including ferestaShaitan, Iblis, jinn, pŏrī, mankind, and whatever else there may be were originally created by God. Now let us look at what spiritual beings are mentioned in the scriptures.
